Pisa Italy originates from the Etruscan times while ancient Romans turned it into their colony in 180 BC. Here is what I managed to see, including the Pisa Leaning Tower. The place is abundant with architectural charm with a few popular pedestrian areas and narrow allies. Even though the city is best known for its famous tower, Pisa houses more than 20 historical churches, a few medieval palaces, and important bridges over the river Arno. Expensive restoration work followed and now the visitors can see only a slight tilt as a lot of correction has been done through modifications.Pisa Leaning Tower is a landmark people from all over the world come to see. However, the tilt increased with time and sensing the danger of toppling in the coming years the tower was closed in 1990. Tourists who visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa till 1990 were lucky as they could climb 294 steps of the spiral staircase to reach the top platform. A lot of effort was put in to counter the tilt on one side but when no effective solution was found, the construction halted.Ĭonstruction work remained closed for almost a century and later the open bell-chamber to the white marble tower was added in 1350-72, by Tommaso Pisano. However, the leaning of the tower to its south side, started even before the third storey was finished. Its foundation stone was laid in 1173 when Pisa counted among the most powerful maritime republic of Italy. When in the city, it's quite common for tourists to head for this structure first. The tilt in the tower was not intentional for this bell tower accompanying a cathedral in Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Pisa or Torre Pendente di Pisa as Italians call it is a freestanding bell tower, a rather popular tourist attraction across the globe.
